I've decided upon my first series on my blog. Hot or Not.
Hot Or Not is where I review brands with 100% honesty after using their products and decide whether its worth the hype or not. Today I'm reviewing Makeup Revolution.
Makeup Revolution is a 'drugstore' brand that offers makeup products at a cheaper price than brands such as Maybelline, Rimmel and Bourjois. I believe it is a UK based brand as it is exclusive to Superdrug and not sold in other parts of the world. I may be wrong. If you are a big fan of Superdrug, you will have seen the Makeup Revolution counters. They sell everything from foundations, lipsticks, contour palettes, eyeshadow and much more. They even have their own sub-brand called 'I Love Makeup'.
I personally started using Makeup Revolution just over a year ago. I started with one of their concealer palettes which I brought off eBay for £9.99. I later found out that it was sold in Superdrug for the mere price of £6. Once I discovered this, I started buying more of their palettes and their lipsticks.
All of the products that I will review and rate are products that I have used and brought with my own money. They are honest reviews and are all mine. If you have any reviews for these products, feel free to leave them below.

PRIMERS & FIXERS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PRO FIX AMAZING MAKEUP FIXING SPRAY:
This is a spray that you apply after your makeup to make it stay longer during the day. This product retails for £5 and has a 3.8 star rating on Superdrug's website. I've used this product a couple times but haven't really noticed any difference in the wear time of my makeup. I haven't really tried to compare it either. When first using the product, the smell is something to question. It smells very 'hospital-y' and has an alcoholic scent to it. If you are a rather knowledgeable person, you will know that on products, ingredients are listed by amounts, if that makes sense. So the first ingredient is Aqua (latin word for water). This means that the majority of the product is made up of water. Looking in the ingredients, 'Alcohol Denat' is second in the list. Alcohol Denat is short for denatured alcohol. This is the reason for the smell. I consider this to be an issue as alcohol very much dries out the skin. I wouldn't recommend this product, especially to those with dry skin naturally. Overall, I would rate this a 6/10.
AQUA SEAL LIQUID EYE PRIMER & SEALANT:
This new product is a dual purpose products. On the back of the packaging it states it can be used to prime the eyelids and also seal your eyeshadow to last longer. It retails for £3 on and has a star rating of 5. Taking a look at the single review it has, the person said it made her 'eyeliner last for 2 days, even after showering'. This must mean its good right? Upon use, its very oily and seems to not be water based. It feels amazing on the eyelids and makes a perfect mixer for pigments. It really helps with sealing. It managed to seal in my glitter onto of eyeshadow for the whole day and it had no fallout whatsoever. Looking at the ingredients, the main ingredient is Isododecane. Upon googling, it's a solvent that helps the spreadability of products on the skin. This is where the priming comes into action. It allows the eyeshadow to glide on, meaning more pigmentation from the eyeshadow and helps with fallout on application. The only downside is that when it gets into your eye, it isn't the most comfortable of experiences. As well as this, because its a solvent it has 'smell that hurts'. For example, nail polish remover, you can feel the smell in your eyes? This probably sounds so weird to some people... Anyway, I would definitely recommend this product and i give it a 9/10.
FOCUS & FIX EYE PRIMER:
This eye primer is applied before eyeshadow to prolong the wear of eyeshadow and prevent creasing. It retails for £2.50 and has a 5 star rating on the Makeup Revolution website (no reviews on the Superdrug website). This is one of the products I reach for on a daily basis, I love it. It has a typical doe foot applicator making it easy to apply. It has a good skin tone coverage to it that evens out all the mis-pigmentation on the eyelid. Once gently patted onto the eyelid, it has a sort of tackiness to it. Like glue tacky. Not cheap tacky. Not a bad tacky where your eyes stick together either. The kind of feeling that allows you to give the primer your permission to look after your eyeshadow and make sure it stays on your eyelid. It keeps your eyeshadow in place and doesn't allow creasing. I would totally recommend this product, I reach for it, more than I do with Urban Decay's Primer Potion. Overall, I would give this a solid 10/10.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOUNDATION & CONCEALER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOCUS & FIX CONCEALER:
First off is their 'Focus & Fix' liquid concealer in the shade Light 03 (see right). It retails for £2 and has a 4 star rating on Superdrug's website. I found it very, very sheer with very little coverage. Unfortunately, when set with a loose translucent powder (that I live by) it oxidises into a very orange pigment that you would think would cover those bags, but it doesn't. It makes it seem like the concealer is too dark for your skin tone. I am yet to try their foundation but if it is anything like the concealer, it will be a no go. Overall, I would rate these concealers 3/10.
COVER AND CONCEAL PALETTE:
Next is their 'Cover and Conceal' concealer palette (see left). I have two in the shades Light and Light/Medium. These palettes retail for £6 and have a 4.8 star rating on Superdrug's website. In the palette you get 8 shades. If you calculate the price of each pan, it comes out as 75p per pan. That is very good for a general price. On application with a brush, it can be quite streaky but the coverage is medium, borderline full coverage. With application of a sponge, the coverage is heavier and really good for under the eyes. For breakouts and blemishes, the concealer is good but not amazing at covering up heavily red pigmented patches. For the cost of 75p a shade, its such good value for money and I would totally recommend it! Overall, I would rate it a 9/10.
COLOUR CORRECTION PALETTE:
Alongside with their concealers, they have a colour correction palette that retails at £6 too.It has a 3 star rating on Superdrug's website. It has 8 pans again with different shades (baby pink, lilac, light green, medium skin tone colour, darker coral toned colour, light yellow and an iridescent silver/illuminator).The idea of this palette is to be used before concealer or foundation as a base to correct the different coloured pigmentations in the skin. Based upon the colour wheel, different colours will cancel out others. For example, for red blemishes on your skin, using a green concealer/base will counteract the red pigment and when foundation is applied, the red disappears. With this palette I have found that some colours work better than others. As much as it sounds like magic, it really does work. You look a bit like an idiot with loads of colours smeared on your face, but beauty is pain, right? The silver iridescent shade is perfect for a 'dewy' base. To get that glow under your foundation. Kind of like being pregnant without being pregnant. I would totally recommend this palette to anyone who suffers with pigmentation issues or for someone who just wants to balance out their skin tone without using a harsh, full coverage foundation. Overall I would rate it a 9/10.
PRESSED POWDER:
Pressed powder is a massive must in anyones makeup kit, that is why it is so important it is the perfect shade. This product retails for only £2 and has a 5 star rating on Superdrug's website (1 review though). When I first bought this product I didn't realise they weren't translucent, there were actually loads of shades, my store just didn't have them displayed as so. Upon using it, I discovered it had a pink undertone to it. I have really pinky red cheeks so I do what I can to cover it up. When using this product it enhanced the pinkness in my cheeks and spoiled all my hard work in concealing. When looking on the back it very specifically says "Porcelain Soft Pink". Looking on the website it sells the translucent version. Anyhow, the coverage of the product was good and didn't appear 'cake-y' on the skin. I would imagine having bought the correct shade, this review would be way more positive. I would definitely recommend this product, but make sure its the right one! I would rate it a 7/10 based upon my bad experience with it at first.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CONTOUR, BLUSH & HIGHLIGHTER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a 3-in-1 palette complete with a contour, blush and highlight shade. There are a range of different palettes where the shades varies. The palette I am reviewing is the CO1 palette. This retails for £3.50 on Superdrug's website. The size of the pans are amazing considering the price, they are really big and quite deep so you know you're not going to run out quickly. The blush is a beautiful rose gold colour and goes with any skin tone, as well as the highlighter which is a champagne colour with a slight pink undertone to it. The contour/bronzer shade is matte and perfect for warming up the face and adding dimension. The colours are very warm and would suit some one with more of a medium to darker skin tone. The pigmentation is amazing! I would recommend this product and I rate it an 8/10.
This palette retails for £8. It contains 8 different shades so works out £1 for each colour. It comes with three highlight colours and 3 contour colours. There is then an iridescent highlighter and a medium concealer shade. This product is perfect for light to medium skin tones as there is such a range of colours. It has warm and cooler shades for the perfect contour. They blend really well into unset foundation and set really well with a powder. The only negative is that the colours don't last long if you only use one. I've already hit pan on one colour after having it just under a month. Other than that, I would totally recommend this product. It is amazing and a go-to product every morning. Despite the fact it runs out quite quickly I still rate it a solid 10/10.
ULTRA CONTOUR PALETTE:
This palette retails for £8 and is a powder version of the cream contour palette. The colours are almost identical. It comes with three matte contour shades, two matte highlight shades, 1 shimmery highlight and 2 marbled iridescent/glittery highlighter shades. They have amazing pigment and blend really well into the skin. The palette lasts a long time as you do not need much of the product at all. The product lasts all day with a flawless finish. I would definitely recommend this products as it is a lot cheaper than more expensive brands such as Anastasia Beverley Hills. Overall, I would again, rate this a solid 10/10.
These single eyeshadows are retailed for only £1! They are big and deep pans of really pigmented blush. You really do not need a lot of product as it is so pigmented. They blend effortlessly and come in so many shades. I own and have used : Wow, Treat, Now and Sugar. My favourite is Sugar as it is a matte coral, pink. Its beautiful for the summer and adding some dimension to the cheeks. There is no fault with these products. If i had any issue, it would be the amount of talc in these blushes but they are cheap so you can't expect Makeup Geek quality blushes at the same time.
This palette consists of a selection of blushes that have a shimmery, iridescent or matte finish. It retails for £6 and has a 4.8 star rating on the Superdrug website. It contains the two highlighter shades from the powder contour palette, three pinky blushes in the same consistency and two brown, one matte, one shimmery. This palette really contains a really wide variation of colours. Personally I don't like shimmery blushes, I prefer matte blushes so this palette isn't for me. However they are really pigmented, they blend really well and looks good. It seems suitable for all skin colours. Overall, I am going to rate it an 8/10 as its just my personal preference that I don't like the shimmer.
UNKNOWN BLUSH PALETTE:
This palette contains the brightest blushes I have ever seen in my entire life. Unfortunately its an exclusive palette. You can only get it in a blush and highlighter set. You can't buy this set anywhere now other than eBay or around the christmas period. It contains 8 shades. Seven are matte and one has gold reflection in it. Four of the shades a pinks, two are more coral colours and two are more red. In the picture, the colours are really different than in real life but if you own the palette you can see that its the same palette. The pigmentation is ridiculous but still blends amazingly. My only issue with this is that the top right colour has something wrong (might be just my palette) upon taking a swatch, my finger went straight through, it must the the talc content in that particular shade. It went everywhere so I had to put it back into place. Despite this, I would still rate it an 8/10.
MONO PRESSED HIGHLIGHTER:
These, like the blushes, retail for only £1. The only problem is that you can't buy them online anymore. I'm not sure if you can buy them in store. I got mine in an advent calendar that they did. They are in the same packaging so big and deep pans. They are almost too pigmented! They have such a variety of colours and finishes and they are beautiful. I own the shades Pink Lights, Hidden Lights, Golden Lights. My favourite is Golden Lights (see right). It has a beautiful 'glowy' finish to it and its beautiful with any look. They blend out really well, like everything and are just a general must have in your collection. Overall I would rate these a solid 10/10.
RADIANCE HIGHLIGHTER PALETTE:
This palette is my favourite thing in the whole world. It retails for £8 and has a 4.3 star rating (although it does deserve a 5 star rating). It contains three colours with the same finish. They are not shiny, or glittery or frosty. They are very much 'glowy'. They add a sheen to the skin that looks beautiful. My favourite shade is the far right shade that is a warm golden brown highlighter that is pretty much pregnancy without the pregnancy in a highlighter (the glowy skin you get when your pregnant). It gorgeous and suits especially darker skin tones but works really well on paler skin with a warm bronzer and it blended on top. I would force people to buy this if I had the power to! Overall I rate it a solid 10/10.
UNKNOWN HIGHLIGHTER PALETTE:
This palette contains a variety of highlighter in all different shades and finishes. Unfortunately its an exclusive palette. You can only get it in a blush and highlighter set. It cannot be purchased anywhere official other than eBay. It is usually out at Christmas. The colours blend out effortlessly and can suit all skin types. There are a couple shades that are sold separately. At first glance, the only one I can see that you can buy is the top right shade which is Golden Lights. I would recommend this palette but you can't really buy it so... Thats an issue. Overall I would rate it a 7/10 as there are some shades that I personally don't like.
EYEBROWS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ULTRA BROW PALETTE:
This product is the greatest thing that has ever existed and it retails for £7.99. It is a palette that is dedicated to fleeky eyebrows. It contains : 4 eyeshadows, 2 cream/waxes, concealer, highlighter, mini tweezers, eyebrow pencil and two eyebrow brushes. That works out as 66p per item in the palette. BARGAIN? As you can probably tell, all I have to say about this product is that it is amazing. It allows you to do absolutely anything to your eyebrows. Make them thick and luscious or natural and dainty. The world is your oyster.
Everyone always asks me how I do my eyebrows and this is it ladies and gentlemen. I used to live by the Brow-Zings by Benefit but this palette lasts ages! I've had mine for 4 months and I'm still no where near finishing any sections of this palette. It can be used for more than just eyebrows too! You can use the shadows on your eyes, for contour (which I've done before), the concealer for general concealing an the highlighter for those sharp cheekbones! I would literally force people to buy this if I had the power to. I would rate this a blooming 100/10. Its just too good.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MASCARA & EYELINER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE VIPER MASCARA:
This mascara retails for £3 and has a star rating of 5 stars on the Makeup Revolution website (no reviews on Superdrug). It's called 'The Viper' due to the shape of the wand. I swear down it looks like a cobra. It has a flat wide back that curves round. I'm not really sure how I feel about this mascara. I have mixed feelings. Firstly, I find it can be quite awkward to use. When wearing false eyelashes and trying to blend them in, I find it hard to apply the mascara only to my lashes because of the width of the wand. However, when its on my lashes on their own, it is really good with the curve in the wand, it matches up perfectly. For the lower lashes, its quite hard to get them without smudging it on your lash line as the wand is very dense and the bristles are very close packed and its quite hard as the product isn't excessive. The pigmentation is good and their definition of black, is very black which is very good. I think its a product that has to be tried to be decided and I think its a personal product that some hate and some love. For that reason i'm going to give it a 5/10.
LIQUID EYELINER:
Unfortunately I got this product in a set with other items for Christmas and I can't find it on the website. It seems to be a miniature version so I'm going to assume its this one (see left). This product retails for £1.50 and has a 5 star rating on Makeup Revolutions website (no reviews on Superdrug). My eyeliner doesn't have a shade or number on the packaging so I have no idea if its waterproof or anything. It doesnt have the ingredients on it either which isn't very good, especially when everyone will throw away the packagaing It just has the logo. It is an amazing eyeliner and is very black. The brush is very finely tipped so perfect for that sharp, crisp wing. It dries really quickly and has a really long wear time. Despite the fact mine came with literally no information on it, I'm going to give it an 8/10.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EYESHADOW & EYESHADOW PALETTES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MONO EYESHADOWS:
These eyeshadows are retailed at £1. They are packaged exactly the same as the mono blushes and highlighters. I have 7 shades, from lightest to darkest: Touch Me (see photo), Base, Mocha Love, Delicious, Mountains Of Gold, Insomnia and Black Heart. I've found that all the colours are really pigmented other than Mountains Of Gold which probably has too much talc in it as there is no colour payoff. Considering it is a frosted shadow, and the fact that the highlighters are amazing, its colour pay off is awful. ON swatch, it is beautiful on the finger but then doesn't transfer all the colour across. I would really recommend these colours. especially Touch Me as its the perfect base shade and transition colour for any look.
SCANDALOUS MONO EYESHADOWS:
These set of the mono eyeshadows are the neon colours that are just highlighters in an eyeshadow. These retail for £1 too and have a 5 star review on Superdrug's website. I own two colours, 'Get Ready!' (orange) and 'Go!' (green). I've used them only a couple of times but holy moly, the pigmentation is insane. They are properly neon! I find them a little tricky to blend seamlessly because of the pigmentation and fallout but using a little Aqua Seal, they stay put really well. I would totally recommend these to anyone who loves doing complete face transformations or just loves a big bright eye look. For only £1 they are really good for the more artistic makeup artists. I would rate these an 8/10 because there is fallout and they are a bit harder to work with.
UNKNOWN EYESHADOW PALETTE:
This eyeshadow palette is only available in the Makeup Revolution Advent Calendar that was sold in the Christmas of 2015. It was the 25th box in the calendar. It retailed for £40 I think. I managed to get mine in the sale at £20. It contains 4 matte shades, 2 mattes with silver reflects, 3 shimmers and 3 frosted shades. There is a variety of colours and numerous looks can be created with this palette. Other palettes that are similar retail for around £5 I think so it is great value for money. Overall, the pigmentation of some colours are really good, but others, not so much. Because these palettes are cheap, the eyeshadows have a high talc content which can affect the pigmentation of the colours as well as its staying power. I would suggest pairing with the Aqua Seal by putting a drop of product into the pan. Overall I would rate this palette a 6/10.
UNKNOWN EYESHADOW PALETTE:
This palette is only available in a makeup set that contains other products, the eyeliner previously reviewed also. Like the previous palette, I would say it would retail for about £5 approximately. It has a similar colour set but all the colours are frosted/shimmer apart from a matte black. The colour pay off is the same, some work, some don't. Its a shame because the palette can be really multifunctional. This is the only photo I could find of this palette as its not sold on any websites. You might be lucky enough to find it on eBay. Overall I would rate this palette a 6/10. Mostly because the pigmentation can be off, theres no variation of finishes and their hard to work with.
EXPLICIT CONTENT PALETTE:
This palette is one of the greatest things ever to happen in the world of cheap makeup palettes. It retails for £7.99 and has a 5 star review on Superdrug's website. First off, the packaging alone is awesome. The photo doesn't do it justice but the top of the palette has that thing where you move it and the picture changes. Its awesome! Google it. The colour pay off and pigmentation is unreal! All the colours have amazing pigmentation. They blend amazingly and you do not need a lot of them. There are loads of colours, loads of variations of finishes too. There's a mixture of natural and bright colours for any look. It's very multifunctional and a must have! I would rate this a 100/10. Its the most amazing thing ever!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIPSTICKS, LIP GLOSSES & LIQUID LIPSTICKS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIPSTICKS:
These lipsticks retail for only £1! They have a 4.1 star rating on Superdrug's website. I own quite a few of these lipsticks! I have: The One, Encore, Rebel With Cause, Scandalous Felony, Vice, Dare, Scandalous Immoral, Make It Right, Make Me Tonight and Atomic Serpent. All these colours have wonderful pigment and pay off. The only shade I find disappointing is the Make Me Tonight. It is a dark purple but the ratio of colour to lip balm or whatever the ingredient is, is way to high. It is really sheer. Its even in the atomic range which is known for the bright random colours with lots of pigment but it's really not pigmented. Overall I would rate these a 9/10. The only negative is that some of the colours need a bit more pigment underneath them or just a lipliner under it.
VELVET LIP LACQUER:
These liquid lipsticks are supposed to 'go on as a liquid and dry to a matte touch proof and long wearing intense colour'. These only seem to be available in a Salvation Lip Set that they sell. Not sure if its only a christmas one again. There are two velvet shades but they don't have names... One is a natural light brown and the other is a baby pink. On use, they are very matte but there is not much pigment at all. I would only rate these a 6/10. I use them over lipsticks or over lipliners, never on their own. They smell bloody gorgeous though!!
ULTRA VELOUR LIP LACQUER:
These liquid lipstick are like the velvets. They go on liquid and shiny but dry matte and last ages. These can be purchased in store and online for £3. They have amazing pigment! They can become a little bit flaky but for the price, its worth it. They really stay too. I have two shades from the set (see above) but I also have the colour Velvet Black Heart which is amazing. They are both amazingly pigmented and have such a great finish. They take a while to dry but long enough to make those eyebrows even more fleeky! I would rate these a 9/10.
INTENSE LIPGLOSS:
These lip glosses are supposed to have amazing pigment in them. You can buy some of them online but a couple of them you can get in the set (see above). They retail for £1 on Superdrug's website and have a 2 star rating. I have 6 in total. The ones that come in the set, are smaller than those that you buy online. the ones in the set don't have names either so I have no idea. Theres a bright purple and bright red. From using these two, they are amazingly pigmented and have lots of colour in them. The more natural ones are beautiful as they add shine to any lip colour. Overall i would rate them a 7/10 because they can be really sticky.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OVERALL JUDGEMENT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall I would say that Makeup Revolution is an amazing brand for those that have a budget. I think the majority of the products are amazing but some are down to personal preference. I think they are an amazing brand and they are well worth the buy. So with that, I say that Makeup Revolution is.....
